WhatsApp Direct Link (wa.me): Build One With a Ready Message and Count Who Clicks

A WhatsApp direct link opens a chat with you in one tap, no saved number needed, and a ready message tells you where the customer came from. This guide shows how to build the link right the first time, where to place it, and how to count the people who actually click.

WhatsApp Direct Link (wa.me): Build One With a Ready Message and Count Who Clicks

Short answer: a WhatsApp direct link starts with wa.me followed by your number in international format. It opens a chat with you right away without the customer saving your number, and you can attach a ready message that lands in their typing box. The link is free and works with both regular WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business, but it gives you no numbers on how many people clicked, so if you want that figure you need to route it through a short link that counts clicks, or tag each channel with a different prefilled message.

Plenty of merchants put their phone number in their Instagram bio and leave the customer to copy it, save it, open WhatsApp, and search for it. Every one of those steps loses people along the way, and the customer who was ready to buy a minute ago leaves the page and forgets. A direct link collapses the whole path into one tap, and the ready message solves a bigger problem: the customer who opens the chat, has no idea what to type, and closes it without a word.

The basic format is simple:

wa.me/9665XXXXXXXX

The first part never changes, and the second part is your number in international format. Most broken merchant links we see come down to how the number is written, so keep three rules in mind:

  1. Write the country code 966 with no plus sign and no 00 in front of it.
  2. Drop the leading zero of the local number, so 05XXXXXXXX becomes 9665XXXXXXXX.
  3. Leave out spaces, dashes, and brackets between the digits.

There is an older format starting with api.whatsapp.com/send?phone= followed by the number, and it works the same way, but wa.me is shorter and cleaner in a bio or on print, so that is the one we recommend.

The prefilled message goes after the number like this: a question mark, the word text, an equals sign, and then your message. The catch is that links do not accept spaces or Arabic letters as they are, so the text has to be encoded: a space becomes %20 and every Arabic letter turns into a long string of characters. That is why a message typed by hand into the link usually comes out cut off or does not work at all.

The easiest fix is the free WhatsApp link generator. Pick the country code, type the number and message, and the tool encodes the text for you and hands you a ready link you can copy and test before you publish it.

What should the ready message say?

The prefilled message is more than a greeting, it is the first line of a sales conversation. Keep it short and clear, and make it tell you what the customer wants before you reply. A few that work well:

  • An oud and perfume shop: "Hi, I would like to ask about the oud oil offer"
  • A mandi restaurant: "Hello, I want to order lamb mandi for delivery"
  • A dates store: "Hi, what are your Sukkari dates prices for gift boxes?"

Leave the customer room to edit, and keep links and prices that might change out of it, because the link could live for a whole year on a business card or a shop sign.

Opening WhatsApp for free without saving a number

Many people search for a free way to open WhatsApp with a number they have not saved, and the answer is the same link. Type wa.me followed by the number into your phone browser and the chat opens immediately, with no need to add the number to your contacts. It is handy for you as a merchant when you need to message a delivery driver or a one-time supplier, and it costs nothing and needs no extra app.

There is a lesser-known variation too: a wa.me link with no number, followed only by a ready message. It opens WhatsApp and lets the person choose who to send the message to, which is perfect for a "share this offer with your friends" line in Ramadan and Eid campaigns.

The link on its own does not sell, the placement and the message attached to it make the difference. Here are proven spots with a suggested message for each:

Placement Suggested ready message Note
Instagram and TikTok bio "Hi, I saw your account and want to order" The most important spot for most stores
Product page in your store "I have a question about this product before ordering" Reduces abandoned carts
Snapchat ads "I came from your Snap ad" Separates the ad from the bio
Shop front and invoice "What are this week's offers?" Turn it into a QR code
Button on your website "I have a question about the service" Pin it in a page corner

For printed spots, turn the link into a code customers scan with their camera using the WhatsApp QR generator, and for your website you can grab ready floating-button code from the WhatsApp button generator.

A wa.me link belongs to WhatsApp itself, and it has no dashboard and no reports. You could publish it in twenty places and never learn which one brought customers and which brought nobody. You have two ways around this, depending on your budget and time.

Method one: a different ready message per channel

This one is free and works today. Create a link for each channel with a message that carries a distinguishing phrase, like "I came from Snap" or "I saw your TikTok". When messages arrive you know the source from the first line, and you can tag them with labels in WhatsApp Business and count them at the end of the week.

The weakness is that this counts conversations, not clicks. A customer who tapped, opened WhatsApp, and changed their mind never shows up, and one who deleted the ready message and typed their own loses their source.

Here you put the wa.me link behind a short link, and every tap on the short link is counted before the customer is sent to WhatsApp. With WhatsLoop short links you see click count, source, and timing, every link comes with a print-ready QR code, and you can customize the link name and set an expiry date for a limited campaign. For a deeper look at building short links and reading their reports, see the short links and click tracking guide.

The smartest move after that is comparing two numbers: clicks and the conversations that actually reached you. Lots of clicks with few conversations usually means the ready message is weak, or many visitors opened the link on a computer without WhatsApp. If both are low, the placement itself does not suit your audience.

These are the most common mistakes that send the link to an error page or quietly lose you customers:

  • A zero after the country code, like 96605 instead of 9665, so the link cannot find the number.
  • A plus sign inside the link, which some apps cut the link at.
  • An Arabic message without encoding, so the text gets chopped at the first space.
  • An employee's personal number, and when the employee leaves, every conversation leaves with them.
  • A number printed on thousands of cards that you change two months later, so pick a number you plan to keep for years before printing.

Test every link yourself from a second phone before publishing, and that small step protects you from most of the mistakes above.

When conversations pile up, the real challenge starts

Once the link works well, you will notice the challenge has shifted from bringing customers in to replying fast. Dozens of the same ready messages arrive every day, and most ask the same questions about price, delivery, and opening hours. This is where WhatsApp auto-reply helps, recognizing the ready message and answering instantly, with the bot routing the chat to a team member when the customer needs a person to take over.

You can start with WhatsLoop on the free plan, which includes 200 messages a month and every feature unlocked with no credit card, and try short links and auto-reply on your own number before you decide anything.
